Highball

Also known as “Whiskey Soda”, it's been especially popular in Japan in recent years, and “Kaku Hi”, which is made with whiskey in a corner bottle, is almost synonymous with highball. Recently, various canned versions have been released, so if you're thirsty, you can pick one up at a convenience store right away. It's super easy to make, with a 0% failure rate (I've never heard of anyone failing to make a Highball XD), so even a vegetarian can make one at home!

Highball Recipe:

Whiskey 30~45ml
Soda water
Lemon twist (optional)

Direct method: Add whisky to a highball glass filled with ice, fill with soda water and stir gently. (You can gently squeeze the lemon wedge and throw it into the glass to add flavor.)

Whisky Sour

The Sour family is basically:

base + lemon juice + syrup.

There are many branches in this family, but Whisky Sour is definitely the predecessor of the Sour family. The sweet and sour combination with the whisky flavor of the base is highly acceptable, and it can be said that it is an unchanging whisky mixer! It's also a good starter for many novice drinkers, and it's basically hard to make a sweet and sour drink that doesn't taste good XD.

IBA standard recipe (can be adjusted to your favorite flavor):

Whisky 45ml
Fresh Lemon Juice 30ml
Syrup 15ml
Egg white (optional)

Directions: Shake well using the shaker method, pour into a classic cocktail glass and garnish with a lemon wedge. (Some people will throw in a roll of citrus peel like in the picture.)

Mint Julep

The Mint Julep, with crushed ice and mint, is a perfect summer cocktail, and is very refreshing. The drink has a long history, dating back to the 18th century when it was popular in many parts of the U.S., and was even drunk on waking up in the morning.

It also has a strong Kentucky connection, as the Mint Julep is the official drink of the Kentucky Derby, a major local event, and even 120,000 Mint Juleps are consumed during each event!

Mint Julep Recipe:

Whiskey 60 ml
8-10 fresh mint leaves
1 teaspoon sugar (or 10 ml syrup)

Directions: Mash the mint and sugar in a glass to release the mint flavor, then add the bourbon and crushed ice and stir well to chill, then top up with crushed ice and garnish with a mint leaf.

Old Fashioned

Despite its old-school name, the Old Fashioned has never gone out of style! A classic within a classic, simple yet versatile, it's been No.1 in the world of classic blends for years, and is even the only blend that many whisky neat fans will accept.

Old Fashioned recipe:

Whisky 60ml
1 sugar cube
Bitters 2 dashes

Method: Grind sugar cubes, or dissolve them in bitters and water, add whisky, stir in large ice cubes, and finish with a dab of orange peel oil on the rim of the glass. The proportions and choice of whisky base vary from bar to bar and are quite varied. If you could only choose one whisky to drink, it would be the Old Fashioned!

Hot Toddy

Sometimes when it's cold or you've got a cold, you might want to try a hot toddy, which is a grown-up version of honeyed lemon, and is often used as a warming drink to get rid of colds, or even as a remedy for colds! When the New Crown was raging at the time, there was a guy in the UK who said he was cured by drinking a hot toddy.

Hot Toddy recipe:

Whisky 40 ml
Hot water 40 ml
Honey 20 ml
Lemon juice 20 ml

How to make Hot Toddy: Hot Toddy is made using the “Rolling Method”, in which the liquid is poured back and forth between two copper jugs, and the liquor is set on fire! It's quite difficult, but in general, all you have to do is put all the ingredients into a cup and pour hot water over it.

It was perfected by master mixologist Jerry Thomas, who even renamed it the “Blue Blazer,” for which it has become famous.

Whiskey Salt

The choice of salt is different for every bartender. Commonly used are table salt, rose rock salt, while others use smoked sea salt, paprika sea salt, lemon sea salt, bamboo charcoal sea salt, iron oxide volcanic rock, and Cabernet Sauvignon red wine salt.

How to get a salt rim:

1. spread fine salt on a paper towel or plate
2. Be sure to spread the fine salt evenly
